Superlatives were doled out to describe how Trenton citizens went all-out in support of this year’s Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign, which will help Trenton Memorial Hospital (TMH) purchase life-saving equipment.
And, the superlatives were more than deserved as the TMH Foundation announced that more than $46,000 was raised through the week-long Smile Cookie campaign. Each $1 cookie sold at Tim Hortons outlets in Quinte West went to the hospital foundation for the purchase of cardiac equipment for the hospital, specifically an ECG monitor and a defibrillator.
Hospital foundation members and volunteers gathered at the Tim Horton’s outlet on Division Street in Trenton to deliver the good news on Tuesday morning. Tim Horton’s owner Josephine Robertson turned over the big cheque in the amount of $46,017.36 to Wendy Warner, Executive Director of the TMH Foundation.
This year’s total was double the amount raised from the Smile Cookie campaign last year. And, the overwhelming community support and record amount of cookie sales that benefitted the hospital foundation wasn’t lost on an elated Warner.
“It’s amazing. It leaves us speechless. It’s outstanding that six (Tim Hortons) stores could raise that kind of money selling cookies in a week. They’ve done an absolutely incredible job,” said Warner.
She said the donations toward the cardiac equipment for TMH will truly save lives in the community.
“That equipment will be in use for the next five to seven years and the defibrillator will save a life and the ECG will determine if somebody has a cardiac issue. They will know if someone is at risk of a heart attack so people can take pride in knowing that they bought a smile and saved a heart,” she said.
Warner noted there were more than 250 volunteer hours from Tim Hortons staff invested in this campaign that significantly contributed to its success, including driving orders around and decorating cookies in-house.
Josephine Robertson, owner of Tim Hortons Division Street location in Trenton and several other Quinte West locations, said it was an honour to give back to such a worthy cause.
“We are very honoured to give back over $46,000 for the week of Smile Cookie sales for Trenton Memorial Hospital, which I’m sure will save lives with the equipment that they will purchase,” she said.
Robertson noted $18,000 was raised at the Division Street location alone, with a $5,000 donation coming from Leon’s furniture. “We were very thankful for their huge donation,” she said.
