With the weather getting colder many start thinking about the holiday season. The Brighton Stocking and Sacs for Seniors committee has been already been busy creating Santa sacs for area seniors in long term care and who are alone during the holiday season.
After 3 years, the group switched to the creation of Santa sacks this year so that seniors with mobility issues can better hang on to them as they unpack the goodies inside.
Oldies 100.9 caught up with organizer Heather Haug.
With a goal of providing 300 sacs this year, the committee is also looking for assistance from the local community. They are providing to residents at Golden Pond, Mapleview and Applefest but also work with Community Care clients, to give a little Christmas cheer to those who might otherwise be alone during the holiday season.
Brighton Stockings and Sacs for Seniors are looking for things like:
– large print, word search and puzzle books
– scrubbies, face cloths or hand towels
– wall and pocket calendars
– night lights and flashlights
– disposable razors and shaving cream
– highlighters, pencils, pens, pencil crayons and stationery products
– bath, body washes and lip balms (gently scented only)
– brushes, combs, shampoo and conditioners
– hand, dish or laundry soaps
– Kleenex and or wipes
– Gloves, scarves or socks
– Candies, cookies, chocolate
– Small table top games
“Anything to help out our seniors,” added Haug. “We just want to provide a little cheer and all these products can be purchased in our local shops and businesses.”
The response from local business has also been strong again this year and they are also offering to be drop off locations for the community. These include Just Like Granny’s Bakery, Cole’s TImbermart, Sunflower Health Store, Special Effects, Sobeys, No Frills, Birdhouse, Rene’s Total Comfort, Willow, Saucy Dotty’s, Cailey’s Café, Rocia Naturals and Mrs. B’s Candy.
“All donations are used, we never hold onto anything from year to year, we create as many sacs as we can, and have even provided some to local shelters too.”
