How can you help Ukrainians fleeing their homeland during the war with Russia?
A Brighton group can provide a few answers at a meeting in town tonight.
The HUGS in Brighton (Helping Ukrainians Get Settled in Brighton) group is hosting a meeting – both in-person and virtually – at the Trinity-St Andrews United Church Community Hall (56 Prince Edward St., Brighton) starting at 7 p.m. to see how you can help as aid is needed to help bring Ukrainian families to safety in Canada.
The information meeting will outline ways Brighton residents can help in the effort to relocate Ukrainian refugees from the war as HUGS in Brighton is in need of local residents to open their hearts and doors to host Ukrainian families. An update will be provided on the work HUGS in Brighton has accomplished thus far. The organization is also in need of donations, gift cards and volunteers.
The meeting will also hear from Brighton resident Stacey Martin whose family welcomed the Remezovskyis – a family of five from Ukraine – into their home on May 7. You can hear directly from the Remezovskyis – the first family to arrive in Brighton from Ukraine.
“As soon as war broke out we knew we needed to help in this way,” said Martin in a press release. “It is a big commitment, but honestly we have gained as much out of this as the Remezovskyis.”
For those attending the in-person meeting at Trinity-St. Andrew’s church, masks will be required. For those wishing to participate virtually, contact hugsinbrighton@gmail.com for the Zoom link.
