This year marks the fifth season Robin and York Bell-Smith have defied convention and decorated a tree early, in recognition of Remembrance Day.
That was Robin, who went on to say the tree and its poppies acknowledge Indigenous Veterans Remembrance Day on November 8th, as well as traditional November 11th observances and this year, the tree is lit in blue and yellow in support of those still fighting in Ukraine.
Robin Bell-Smith is a self-admitted Christmas tree fanatic.
Four years ago, she found a way to start the holiday season and pay homage to the sacrifices of our veterans, and those still serving our country.
Robin told us, this year’s Poppy Tree contains some hand-crafted additions recognizing Indigenous Veterans.
According to Robin, she shared her story with a Legionnaire and was really nervous asking for a couple hundred poppies.
What started in some little controversy has become a tradition for the Bell-Smiths.
You’ll find the Poppy Tree on Young Street in Brighton, decorated with poppies and shining with the yellow and blue lights of the Ukrainian flag.
The Poppy Tree will remain for viewing throughout the holiday season.
