It’s certainly not the type of caroling you’re probably used to.
This weekend the Primrose Donkey Sanctuary held a Donkey caroling event where guests could sing Christmas carols along with the rescue donkeys.
The sanctuary is located at 1296 Bowmanton Rd in Alnwick/Haldimand, just south of Alderville.
Donkeys can live to 50+ years if they have been properly cared for, although the average is 40-45 years. This long lifespan has often led to them needing to find new homes when their owners no longer want to care for them.
Sheila Burns, owner of Primrose explained how the sanctuary got started.
Burns said that fundraiser events like caroling with the donkeys help to cover some of the costs of keeping the animals, something that has gotten more expensive as of late.
Dorothy Hart, a volunteer at the sanctuary explained how she first got involved.
Hart said they only hold a few events per year, and all the volunteers band together to create some goods to sell to help raise money for the donkeys.
