The Ruff Start New Beginnings Dog Rescue is located on Chapman Road in Colborne and together with their volunteers, they find good dogs, great homes.
Ruff Start New Beginnings Dog Rescue’s Kelly Beatty told us about their mission.
Working with other shelters and owner surrenders, Ruff Start New Beginnings Dog Rescue works with all breeds of dogs but also specializes in taking dogs that are active and don’t do particularly well in traditional shelters.
With a converted garage that has 8 kennel spaces and access to 3 acres for dogs to run on, they operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year dog rescue.
“Everyone gets walked every day and taken to regular outings, like to Canine Fit,” said Kelly. “We work a little differently, we do extensive assessments on our dogs, so that make a successful matches for our dogs with the right adopting families who can meet their individual needs.”
Families even receive a starter package to ensure a smooth transition.
“Our dogs have had someone fail them, with some bad circumstances, and sometimes due to sickness, illness or death of a loved one. We are passionate about helping a good dog find a great home,” added Kelly Beatty. “We also currently have some puppies that were rescued from puppy mills, and we work with other shelter to shut down mills where Moms and puppies live in horrible circumstances.”
Visiting Ruff Start New Beginnings Dog Rescue is by appointment only.
If you are interested in adopting a dog, they insist on a 24 hour think period after meeting a potential dog to ensure that the fit is right for the family too.
This not for profit organization, all-breed dog rescue that operates in the Durham and Northumberland Regions of Ontario, centred in Colborne. Fundraising is very important to them to ensure their continued work. They host two online auctions each year, one at Christmas and the next one starts on April 2nd, 2023. This online auction with feature items that are used through the summer months and of course, some dog related items too.
Do you want to volunteer?
“We are also looking for some volunteer dog walkers,” added Kelly Beatty. “Or to come work with our dogs helping them socialize and have some fun, chasing a ball too. The more people that we have working with dogs, the better we are at accessing their individual needs too.”
Looking to help with donations?
Although very secure with food for dogs, thanks to the Kibble project and Pet Valu dog stores, they also would like dog toys, bowls, collars, leashes or leads.
“If you have recently lost a dog and don’t know what to do with their things, we would be glad to accept them, they will be put to good use,” added Kelly Beatty.
Ruff Start New Beginnings has successfully re-homed 1,825 dogs and they are hoping to meet their goal of 2,000 successful adoptions this year.
