The Student Artwork Banner Project is an annual project of the Brian Todd Memorial Community Fund that is dedicated to the health and wellness of residents in the Municipality of Brighton. In its 5th year, the project started with 200 entries and this year received just shy of 400 entries.
In partnership with Brighton’s area schools, the Student Artwork Banner Project chooses a theme each year and asks students to design artwork around that theme.
This year’s theme was “What is Art?”
“We posed the question of “What is Art” to our students,” said Sherry Hamilton – a Brian Todd Memorial Community Fund Board Member and Coordinator of this project.
Hamilton said, “It was so interesting to see how the students interpreted this, and their designs show a wide variety of ideas.”
The project assembled a group of local artists to help them curate the best designs, and these entries have been made into banners that are being displayed in the downtown core area of Brighton ( from the arena along Hwy 2 and along Main Street as far west as Lighthouse Financial and up Prince Edward Street towards highway 401) and in the more urban area of Smithfield.
The Downtown Business Improvement Area also selected 4 entries to put on large banners that are being displayed in Casey’s Lane.
The originals of the entries are also being displayed in local long term care homes, where residents can choose one to be displayed in their room too.
“This is a feel good project that really speaks to Brian Todd, an educator for many years in Brighton,” added Hamilton. “It gives our youth a voice to express their ideas and thoughts and gives adults a chance to reflect on what children are taking in from the world around them. We are also seeing families taking photos near their children’s banners too.”
