An in-person, granting event was hosted by the Brian Todd Memorial Community Fund (BTMCF) at the King Edward Community Centre on May 29th, and during the evening 18 grants totaling $53,250 were presented.
Treasurer Bruce Davis told us it was great to be back in-person.
The BTMCF is dedicated to the memory of Brian Todd, who came to the area in the early 1970s and was the former principal at East Northumberland Secondary School for 12 years before become a Superintendent.
“Brian was dedicated and passionate about helping his community, heading many projects, and he passed away too early, in 2011 at 71 years old,” said Bruce Davis – Treasurer of the BTMCF. “In his memory, this fund lends a financial hand to local organizations who are the ones doing the good work and with our support can continue to do that.”
The Fund is dedicated to supporting the health and wellness of area residents accepting grant requests for local not for profit organizations and school organizations.
They recently completed their annual Art Banner project, displaying art from local students throughout the downtown core, in Casey’s Lane and in Smithfield.
Since its establishment in 2009, the BTCMCF (originally known as the Community Health Grant Program has awarded 176 grants totally $649,300 to more 40 community organizations and projects.
They started at slow in the beginning, dispersing only $15,000 in 2009 but now their annual disbursement averages $50,000 per year.
At this year’s granting night, 18 recipients were awarded a total of $53,250. This includes projects at local schools, and organizations working to promote the health and safety of Brighton and area residents.
