The 17th Annual Dave Downs Bridge Hospice Run, Walk and Wag event will be taking place on September 30th, 2023.
There is a 13K run through the back roads of the Warkworth along with a 5K walk route too. Four legged pets are welcome to when accompanied with their runner or walker and there is a planned 1K run for children under 10 years old.
Bridge Hospice’s Alison Lane shared the details.
Starting times for runs:
· Kids 1K 9:00 am
· 13K Run 9:15 am
· 5K Run & Walk 9:20 am
Registration for children is $5.00 each and for adults doing the walk and run it is $45.00 each.
“There is a little something for everyone,” said Alison Lane – Bridge Hospice. “All fitness levels are most welcome, you can walk the 5K or just do a 1K walk, just come out to support the Bridge Hospice.”
The event was named after Dave Downs in 2018, he annually ran in the event and was a supporter of the event through the Warkworth Farm Supply Store. This year the major sponsors are Giant Tiger and Warkworth Pharmacy.
Lane told us more about the man for whom the run was renamed.
“Dave Downs was a farmer from the Codrington / Wooler area and most people knew him as he ran the Warkworth Farm Supply,” added Lane. “He stood out in the crowd, full of energy, tall with red hair and a friendly smile. He was taken from us at 61 years old, far too soon, after a farm equipment / road accident, so we felt it was important to remember him by re-naming this event after him.”
The goal for the event is to raise $15,000 for the general operation of the Bridge Hospice. They are currently accepting donations and registrations for the event.
Lane told us the funds raised will directly support the Hospice.
The Bridge Hospice is a 3 bed hospice faculty located on the edge of Warkworth, Ontario and serves the rural area of Trent Hills, Brighton Quinte West, Colborne, Peterborough County, Wooler and the surrounding area.
“There is absolutely no charge for our services,” said Lane. “We are here to provide support in a home like environment, to our clients in their last few weeks of their life and to help lift the burden of care from family, so that they can concentrate their time with their loved one.”
The event is taking place on September 30th, which is also National Truth and Reconciliation Day, walkers and runs will be wearing orange shirts in support of this important day.
