October is your opportunity to experience and celebrate the heritage, achievements, and contributions of Hispanic communities across the county, and around the world. This month you can attend art exhibitions, view an array of award winning films and experience Hispanic culture close up at the Noche Latina Dinner Gala, an evening of food, music and dance that is certain to please both your palate and your appetite for great music.
Hispanic Cultural Club Event Coordinator Fabian Arciniegas told us it’s the club’s chance to showcase Latin culture.
The month will kick off with a free Hispanic Film Festival from October 3rd to the 5th at the Citizen’s Forum on the second floor of Victoria Hall. The festival will feature several films and will begin with the short film Vela.
The festival will also offer several feature length films including Chinese Takeaway, Spider Thieves, Los Lobos, Memories of my Father, and Un Traductor. All the films will be shown with English subtitles when English is not being spoken in the film.
Arciniegas told us the Latin community continues to grow in Northumberland County.
On October 6th, Latin Hispanic Canadian Women in the Arts will open at the Colborne Art Gallery and run through December 10th in the Crahame Heritage Room. The show will feature the work of five artists and is also free of charge and open to the public Friday through Sunday from noon to 4 pm.
Fabian told us that the club boasts members from just about every Latin American country you can think of including Columbia, Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and more.
October 13th will an evening you won’t want to miss. The Noche Latina Dinner Gala will fill the Best Western Plus Cobourg Inn and Convention Centre with live music featuring Carla and her LatinTrain and dinner by Chef Brian Forsythe.
Archiniegas told us they’ll be dancing the night away and there’ll even be folks there that can help you perfect your samba skills.
An event that is particularly close to Fabian’s heart is The Colores: A Non Operatic Music Journey of an Operatic Singer on October 22nd at 2 pm at the Victoria Concert Hall. This show was created and directed by Fabian and explores the musical journey of a Columbian boy.
