Miedema Farms is a progressive dairy farm located just outside of Cobourg. Dairy farming in Northumberland County is one of the largest revenue sources for the County, bringing in nearly 35-million dollars annually.
This is a busy time of year for Jesse as a big part of taking care of his herd includes providing for their comfort through the winter. To that end, Jesse’s been busy the last number of weeks harvesting wheat and bailing straw.
Jesse told us a bit about his operations.
Taking over the farm meant being responsible for the feeding and caring for calves, moving cattle from beds to the milking parlor holding areas, and the general cleaning and upkeep needed to keep his herd happy. For Jesse though, it’s the culmination of a lifetime of training.
Miedema says they’ve been growing working on growing the operation, which is already one of the largest in Northumberland County.
The legacy passed down to Jesse is something he’s looking forward to pass on to his children.
Being a farmer has been Jesse’s goal as long as he can remember.
Of course animal husbandry has been a big part of Miedema’s upbringing, including the day to day care of his cows as well as selective breeding to produce the best milk. Being a good caretaker of the land he hopes to pass on to his sons is another thing that motivates Jesse to be conscious of the impact his herd and crops have on the land.
As of 2021, the total number of farms in Northumberland rested at 840 which amounts to nearly 2 percent of the provincial total.
We asked Jesse what, in his opinion, was the best part of being a dairy farmer.
Miedema also enjoys sharing his experiences with those who come to visit the farm.
So the next time you’re enjoying some ice cream, a large double-double or an ice cold glass of milk, think of and thank the Miedema’s and the work they do to provide Northumberland County with high quality milk for all our diary products.
