The giving spirit is in the air as Tammie’s Jammies launches their sixth donation drive to collect Christmas pyjamas for youth in the Children’s Aid society.
This year they’ve kicked off with a launch party at Ganaraska Financial Credit Union, and donation boxes were soon to follow at locations across Port Hope and Cobourg.
The Tammie’s Jammies donation drive was initially pushed by Port Hope Police Constable Tammie Staples. She had such a positive experience when adopting her son that she wanted to give back to the foster system. Over the years, they’ve supported foster children in Port Hope, and have grown to support Highland Shores Children’s Aid Society.
Last year their total number of donations tallied to 1,400 pairs of freshly-bought pyjamas. This year, we spoke with Jerry Siebarth from the Tammie’s team about this year’s goal.
Jerry Siebarth is Port Hope’s Transit Coordinator on his business card, but passionate Tammies’s Jammies representative in his heart. Siebarth initially reached out to the GoNorthumberland newsroom about Tammie’s Jammies in July.
Ever since, Siebarth has kept the newsroom close while developing this year’s events. This year, the Port Hope Panthers will host a Tammie’s Jammies night when the Frankford Huskies come to visit on Nov. 25. Siebarth initially challenged both the Panthers and the Huskies to see which team could spawn the most donations. At the game, Tammie’s son, the “Original Tammie’s Jammie,” will join his mother for the game-day puck drop.
Over in Cobourg, the Cougars will also host a Tammie’s Jammies night during their regular Monday night game on Nov. 27. The team will be collecting donations for the drive, just the same.
Siebarth recounts living Christmas vicariously through the foster children that Tammie’s Jammies supports. When asked about why this is something he’s passionate about – Jerry left no dry eyes in the GoNorthumberland studio.
Siebarth told us about the project’s expansion to support Highland Shores.
Donation boxes will be out at the Port Hope Police Station, Port Hope Municipal Buildings, Port Hope Transit Buses, Candlelight Festival Market on Lent Lane, Queenie’s Bakery, Giant Tiger Port Hope, Giant Tiger Cobourg, Davis’ Independent, Grocer, Lakeridge Chrysler, JJ’s Steak and Burger Cobourg.
Residents have until Dec. 20 to donate.
Siebarth also promised more details about an event in-the-works through Cobourg Giant Tiger. GoNorthumberland will provide more details when they’re available.
