Northumberland Hills Hospital’s Community Mental Health Services work to assist individuals who are experiencing mild to severe mental health concerns. Every Friday in January and February, you can connect with members of the team at a free Meditation and Mental Wellness session held at the Port Hope Public Library from 1 to 2 pm.
Peer Support Specialist Alex McPhee told us it’s open to everyone in the community.
During the hour, you’ll engage in guided meditations and short breathing exercises designed to lower stress and anxiety and provide you a sense of calm, peace and balance.
Mental Health Case Manager Jake Lauder described some of the exercises.
Some famous meditators you might recognize include Beatle Paul McCartney, Oprah, and Keanu Reeves who all use meditation as a way to relax and free their minds from worries and discomfort. Evidence is also pilling up that meditation can provide some physical health benefits as well, like easing pain and improving sleep.
McPhee told us meditation is becoming more popular as people learn more about it’s benefits.
A key benefit of meditation is that it’s easy to begin and requires no special equipment and the NHH Community Mental Health Services team can help you get started.
No registration is required for the sessions at the library but you’re asked to bring a yoga mat to sit on, however chairs will also be provided if that would make you most comfortable.
