Central Hastings OPP say they’ve laid attempted murder and other charges after three people suffered what has been described as serious stab wounds in Madoc Township.
On Thursday, April 25, 2024, police issued a release saying the alleged incident happened on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, between 11:30 p.m. and midnight on McCann Road in Eldorado, when a man travelled to the area by taxi.
According to police, the car driver, a 59-year-old man, was allegedly assaulted, suffering life-threatening injuries.
“He drove himself to a nearby gas station and was then transported to a hospital in Kingston,” said police.
Two people – a man and woman ages 64 and 59 – who had been in a home were also allegedly assaulted, resulting in life-threatening injuries, reported OPP.
“They were transported to hospital by Hastings-Quinte Paramedics (Services).”
The man then allegedly fled the scene in a stolen vehicle and was found driving on Hwy. 62 and arrested without incident, said police.
As a result of an investigation, police said Matthew Helm, 36, of Tweed, was charged with: Attempt to commit murder – three counts; break and enter with the intent to commit an indictable offence; theft of a motor vehicle, and mischief over $5,000.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The accused was remanded into custody, with a scheduled appearance before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on May 2, 2024, said police.
Investigators said they believe there was no safety risk to the general public during the incident.
Police provided no further details.
