The Northumberland Land Trust (NLT) is hosting the marathon which is a vital fundraiser for its conservation efforts. Expert birders will embark on a 24-hour journey across 14 nature reserves spanning over 1,200 acres. Last year’s marathon set a new record with 151 bird species spotted, showcasing the richness of Northumberland’s wildlife. This year, with the addition of new reserves like the de Lint property near Campbellford, organizers anticipate even more discoveries. The event honors Norma Wallace, a dedicated supporter of NLT and avid birder.
The Birding Marathon not only celebrates the region’s diverse birdlife but also highlights the importance of preserving these habitats. All proceeds from the marathon contribute to NLT’s Green Corridor Capital Campaign, which aims to raise $5 million for expanding protected areas in Northumberland County. This campaign seeks to secure more land for nature reserves, ensuring vital habitat for wildlife.
Participants in the marathon experience the thrill of birdwatching while supporting a crucial cause. “Last year, it was such fun to be able to spend an entire day birding, especially at a spot as biodiverse as the Lone Pine Marsh,” said Leslie Abram, a member of the Board of Directors. “We teamed up to ensure this nature reserve got the best coverage possible and with two sets of eyes and ears by the end of the day we had tallied an amazing 96 species of birds altogether.”
The Birding Marathon serves as a snapshot of Northumberland’s ecological richness, showcasing rare sightings like Hooded Warblers, Red-throated Loons, and Great Horned Owls. As the NLT expands its conservation efforts, each new reserve adds to the tapestry of protected landscapes, safeguarding habitats for future generations.
In memory of Norma Wallace’s passion for nature and birdwatching, the Birding Marathon stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of conservation and community engagement. Participants and supporters alike play a vital role in preserving Northumberland’s natural heritage, ensuring that its landscapes remain teeming with life for years to come.
