In just under a month, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) says staff at Warkworth Institution have seized more than $312,000 worth of contraband and unauthorized items.
In a recent release, officials say thanks to the vigilance of staff between April 26 and May 20, 2024, contraband and unauthorized items were seized at the medium-security federal institution.
Seized items include tobacco, marijuana, shatter (cannabis concentrate), crystal methamphetamine, edged weapons and a cellphone.
“The total estimated institutional value of these seizures is $312,365,” report officials.
The CSC says it continues to use a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. Such tools include ion scanners and detector dogs, as examples.
The CSC also says it has heightened measures to prevent contraband and unauthorized items from entering its institutions to help ensure a safe and secure environment for all.
In the release, officials reiterate that the CSC also continues to work in partnership with police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband or unauthorized items into correctional institutions.
The CSC has a telephone tip line for all federal institutions where information about activities relating to security, drug use or trafficking can be shared. The toll-free number – 1-866-780-3784 helps ensure information shared is protected and callers remain anonymous, say officials.
