Northumberland OPP are reminding motorists to slow down when getting behind the wheel – and that traffic enforcement continues on Highway 401 after multiple unrelated incidents.
Over the weekend, police said four drivers were charged with stunt driving after multiple vehicles were allegedly clocked in excess of 150 km/h.
In these instances, the accused also had their licences suspended for 30 days and vehicles were impounded for 14 days, reported police online.
In a release about ongoing traffic enforcement efforts on Hwy. 401, OPP also reported that they made two arrests in unrelated incidents.
According to police, the one alleged incident dates back to July 8 shortly before 2 a.m. when an officer was conducting speed enforcement in the Port Hope area and clocked a vehicle at 152 km/h. OPP allege the vehicle briefly stopped for police before taking off and exiting the highway.
An investigation started, and on July 12, OPP reported making an arrest in relation to the incident.
As a result of the investigation, police said a 28-year-old Milton resident was charged with drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed, obstruct peace officer, flight from peace officer, and dangerous operation.
The accused will appear in Cobourg court at a future date, and also had their licence suspended for 30 days, said police.
In another unrelated incident, on July 13, at about 5:55 p.m., while on patrol in the Hwy. 401 Cramahe area, police said they were alerted to a suspended driver by their automated licence plate recognition (ALPR) system.
A traffic stop was conducted and following investigation, the driver was arrested. A 56-year-old Pickering resident was charged with operation while prohibited, reported OPP.
The accused will appear in court at a future date, and had their vehicle impounded for 45 days, said police.
Northumberland OPP continues to remind the public that drivers and other road users can significantly contribute to safer roads by avoiding taking unnecessary risks and complying with all traffic laws.
