A Brighton resident has been charged in relation to a historical sexual assault investigation, say Northumberland OPP.
On Friday, July 19, 2024, police confirmed charges were laid. Police said their investigation started back on June 19, 2024, when a complainant reported an incident to police.
The Northumberland OPP crime unit assisted with the investigation, added OPP.
The alleged incident is reported to have occurred from 2011 to 2012 at a residence in the Township of Cramahe – the victim was known to the accused during this timeframe, said police.
On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, police said a 59-year-old resident from the Municipality of Brighton was arrested and charged with sexual assault on a person under 16 years of age, and sexual interference.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The accused will not be named to protect the identity of the victim, said police. The accused will appear in Cobourg court at a later date, added police.
OPP are reminding the public that there is no statute of limitations on sexual offences and a report can be made to police at any time, regardless of how much time has passed.
If you do not wish to make a report to police or need more time and support to make that decision, there are community partners available to help, stressed police.
