There’s still time to check out a showcase of young photographers’ work at the Quinte Arts Council Gallery.
The photography show features winning photos from the Bay of Quinte Regional Marketing Board’s second student photography contest.
Earlier this year, Bay of Quinte youth between ages seven and 18 were called to submit photos taken of people, places or things during the last year with the board’s partner communities of Belleville, Brighton, Greater Napanee, the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and Quinte West.
The purpose was to encourage artistic development, experimentation and expression among youth and to see how they perceive the world around us, which is often a much different perspective than adults, explained the board, in a recent release.
“We were blown away by the response to the photo contest with over 80 youth submitting more than 170 photos from around the region,” said Bay of Quinte executive director Dug Stevenson. “It’s really obvious that there are a lot of young artists in the making locally and we want to play an active role in fostering their development by giving them a platform through this contest.
“We’re also super grateful to the QAC for offering their gallery space to give students a chance to see their work up on display and for the community to see it as well.”
The show is on at the gallery until July 26.
“Supporting young artists, fostering creativity and innovation in this new generation of creators is a key part of the mandate of the Quinte Arts Council,” added QAC executive director Janet Jarrell. “The key to building a sustainable arts future lies in making young artists a priority today, in education and all other areas of everyday life.”
Jarrell went on to describe the students as outstanding, saying this event showcases impressive levels of skill, creativity and courage.
The show features 32 winning photos in the QAC Gallery at 36 Bridge St. E. in downtown Belleville, with the first-place winners in each category earning a digital camera and second- and third-place winners taking home cash prizes.
