Northumberland County Council has approved a significant expansion of affordable housing in Colborne at 123 King Street East.
The decision follows a presentation by the Northumberland County Housing Corporation (NCHC) to the Social Services Standing Committee on July 31, as previously reported.
The Council’s approval allows the NCHC to proceed with preliminary designs for redeveloping the site, which the County and NCHC jointly purchased in 2023 to preserve the local stock of deeply affordable housing.
The redevelopment plan includes the construction of up to 60 units, a substantial increase from the current 22 units on-site. These new units will feature a mix of Rent-Geared-to-Income and market rent housing, catering to individuals with low to moderate incomes, including seniors and persons with special needs.
The released funds will support pre-construction activities, such as building design and budget preparation. The project will be executed in phases to ensure that current tenants can remain in their homes until the new units are ready, at which point all tenants in good standing will transition to the new accommodations.
This redevelopment is a crucial step in addressing the escalating need for affordable housing in Northumberland County.
