You know it’s nearing the end of summer when nature starts making tracks south.
The Labour Day weekend marks the annual Monarchs and Migrants event. While May is known for the peak of northbound migration, September is ideal for observing those travelling south. A unique aspect of this time of year is the increased visibility of migrating insects, making it a weekend dedicated to celebrating both birds and insects.
Friends of Presqu’ile Provincial Park’s Beverlie Cook tells us you can be part of the experience by attending this Labour Day weekend’s Monarchs and Migrants event.
Cook says it’s quite a sight to see the monarchs congregate at Presqu’ile to prepare for their flight south.
Cook says there’s something unique about Presqu’ile Provincial Park that makes it a migration magnet.
An equally important part of Monarch and Migrants weekend is watching and tracking shorebirds. Cook says you’ll see about 25 species of these birds fueling up for their trip south.
On Saturday – Friends of Presqu’ile will host their final fundraising BBQ of the season.
All programs associated with Monarch and Migrants weekend are free but you do require a paid park day pass to get in.
To guarantee entry into the park visitors are encouraged to make a daily vehicle reservation by visiting Ontario Parks Reservation System
