An investigation is continuing after a collision involving a train and passenger vehicle claimed the life of man early Monday morning, say police.
In an update Monday afternoon, Northumberland OPP said the investigation is ongoing, with help from the OPP’s crime unit.
Earlier Monday, Sept. 9, 2024, at about 12:50 a.m., police said they received a call from CN Police about a collision that had occurred on Station Road in the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand. Emergency crews, including paramedics and the fire department, also responded to the scene.
The sole occupant of the passenger vehicle – an adult male – was pronounced deceased at the scene, said OPP, in their Monday afternoon update.
Police did not specify the age of the deceased, or where he was from. In response to inquiries, an OPP spokesperson said police are not disclosing such particulars at this time, calling this a tragic incident.
The spokesperson also said: “Our thoughts are very much with the family. We are respecting their privacy, but I can say he was not (from) the immediate area.”
The road and railway line at the location was closed as OPP’s forensic identification services (IDENT) assisted officers with the investigation. OPP resources cleared the area around 6 a.m.; however, the railway remained closed until about noon, as CN Police continued conducting their own investigation.
No other details have been released by police.
