Tomorrow (September 10. 2024) marks World Suicide Prevention Day, a global event dedicated to raising awareness about suicide and mental health.
The Canadian Mental Health Association, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (CMHA HKPR), is promoting this year’s theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide.” The campaign calls for open conversations about suicide and mental health, aiming to reduce stigma and encourage those in need to seek help.
Suicide remains a significant public health issue in Canada, with approximately 12 lives lost to suicide each day, amounting to over 4,500 deaths annually. In 2023, 840,000 Canadians reported serious thoughts of suicide, and there were around 20,000 hospitalizations due to self-harm.
The 9-8-8 National Suicide Crisis Helpline offers free, confidential support 24/7 for anyone in distress. Community Care Hospice will host a remembrance event at Old Mill Park in Lindsay at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow to honour those lost to suicide.
For more information on suicide prevention, mental health resources, or local support, visit www.cmhahkpr.ca or call the 9-8-8 helpline for immediate assistance.
