Police say they’ve seized “thousands of dollars” worth of counterfeit cash and made two arrests after an investigation in Madoc Township.
According to OPP, the investigation involved members of its East Region community street crime unit and Central Hastings Detachment.
Earlier this week – on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024 – police said a Central Hastings officer responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked on Crookston Road just before 10 a.m.
Police said they confirmed one person in the vehicle had an outstanding arrest warrant leading to an arrest. Police allege a subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a “quantity of counterfeit cash, as well as the equipment and materials used to make it.”
OPP said this resulted in another person in the vehicle being arrested.
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, police said a search warrant was then executed at a residence on Cooper Road, where allegedly more counterfeit cash and additional materials and equipment were seized.
“The value of the completed and partially-completed counterfeit cash is into the thousands of dollars,” said OPP, on Thursday, Sept. 12.
As a result of the investigation, police said two Madoc Township residents, ages 44 and 40, are now facing charges related to making counterfeit money and possession counterfeit money.
One of the accused was also further charged with breach of recognizance, reported OPP.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
On Thursday, police said both of the accused remained in custody and were scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on Friday, Sept. 13.
Any businesses in the area that believe they may have received counterfeit cash are being advised to contact Central Hastings OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and refer to incident E241212964.
No other details were released by police.
