A search for a man who went into the water Saturday afternoon in the marina area and didn’t resurface has ended tragically, with the man’s body pulled from the Cobourg Harbour area Saturday evening.
On the morning of Sunday, Sept. 22, 2024, Northumberland OPP and the Cobourg Police Service confirmed the individual was found Saturday evening deceased.
“On the evening of Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, the Ontario Provincial Police underwater search, rescue and recovery unit located the adult male in Lake Ontario deceased,” said CPS, in a release Sunday morning.
“Emergency services have cleared the scene, and the Cobourg Police Service continues to work with the coroner’s office as they conduct a post-mortem (examination). There is no risk to public safety,” said Cobourg police.
“OPP were assisting Cobourg police with a request for the USRU and the person was located deceased,” said an OPP spokesperson Sunday morning.
No other details were released by police on Sunday.
On Saturday, Cobourg police issued a release advising the public of a large police and emergency services presence at the Cobourg Harbour, saying crews were searching for a man who went into the water and had not resurfaced in the marina area.
Members of CPS, the Cobourg Fire Department, paramedics, the coast guard and Northumberland OPP responded to the call Saturday afternoon at the pier at the foot of Division Street, reported CPS, on Saturday.
Central Region OPP posted to X about Northumberland OPP responding to a possible drowning call at about 2 p.m.
