Northumberland OPP is reminding motorists to observe pedestrian crosswalks and crossovers following several complaints of drivers in Brighton failing to stop.
These incidents involve motorists driving through crosswalks even when pedestrians are attempting to cross with activated lights.
The OPP emphasises that when crosswalks and crossovers are in use, all users, including those in wheelchairs, have the right of way. Motorists are expected to stop and wait until the intersection or walkway is entirely clear.
A crosswalk typically connects sidewalks on opposite sides of a roadway and can be marked by signs, lines, or pedestrian signals, while a pedestrian crossover is a designated area with pavement markings and crossing signs. Drivers and cyclists must yield to pedestrians at these locations, waiting until they’ve safely reached the sidewalk before proceeding.
Failing to yield at crosswalks, school crossings, or crossovers can lead to fines up to $1,000 and four demerit points, with double fines in Community Safety Zones. Drivers are urged to be especially attentive in these areas, particularly around children, seniors, and those with disabilities.
