A 33-year-old local man is facing child-pornography-related charges after an investigation by Cobourg police.
On Friday, Dec. 13, 2024, the Cobourg Police Service issued a brief release saying its criminal investigations branch launched an investigation after receiving information that a person may be in possession of “child sexual abuse materials.”
As a result of the investigation, police said on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024, a 33-year-old Cobourg man was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography and accessing child pornography.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
Police said the accused will not be named to protect the identity of the victim.
The accused was held for a bail hearing and the investigation is ongoing, added police.
The service also highlighted how it’s part of the Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet.
“The provincial strategy partners will continue to aggressively identify and pursue individuals who use technology to exploit children,” reads the CPS release. “Parents are reminded to take a proactive approach to help protect their children from online sexual exploitation by using the resources at cybertip.ca or protectchildren.ca.”
Police are also reminding citizens that information about internet child exploitation can also be reported anonymously at Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting Crime Stoppers online at ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
The cybertip.ca website is another resource for reporting information.
