Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Northumberland and Quinte regions, warning of a winter storm with snow and freezing rain possible late Wednesday evening into Thursday, Feb. 13.
Officials say snowfall amounts may exceed 15 centimetres, making for messy commutes.
“Significant snowfall associated with a low-pressure system is likely for the area beginning Wednesday evening,” reads Environment Canada’s statement. “Confidence in the exact track of the low-pressure system is uncertain at this point, but it is likely that snow will transition to freezing rain or rain late Wednesday night or Thursday morning.”
Officials also note that if the track of the system shifts further south, precipitation will remain predominantly snow, and significantly higher amounts will be possible. Regardless of how the storm tracks and whether it brings freezing rain and/or snow, officials are predicting hazardous travel conditions Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.
People are being urged to consider postponing non-essential travel. Those on the road should anticipate poor visibility in heavy and local blowing snow.
Environment Canada has issued statements for the eastern Northumberland area and Quinte and Belleville, and the western Northumberland area from Cobourg to Colborne.
