Families can fish for free in Ontario from Feb. 15 to 17 without needing a fishing licence or Outdoors Card. Conservation catch limits, size restrictions, and all other fishing regulations still apply, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Officials advise checking ice conditions with local operators before heading out, as clear blue ice is the strongest. Fishers are encouraged to let someone know their plans and wear appropriate gear for safety and comfort.
Canadian residents fishing this weekend must carry government-issued ID. Outside of free fishing periods, most people aged 18 to 64 need an Outdoors Card and fishing licence. Veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members living in Ontario can fish for free year-round.
Fishing licences can be purchased online at huntandfishontario.com or at participating ServiceOntario and authorized licence issuer locations.
