A proposed gravel pit expansion in Cramahe Township is facing strong opposition from residents concerned about increased noise and disruption.
At a special council meeting on Tuesday evening, residents spoke out against Fidelity Property Group’s request to expand operating hours to 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday, with the possibility of work on Sundays and holidays. Fidelity, which operates the Telephone Road pit, says the extension is necessary to support Highway 401 construction and an asphalt plant on-site.
Cramhae Resident Advocate Association member Jackie Greenen gives us an update.
Speaker after speaker expressed frustration with truck noise and potential disruptions to daily life.
According to Greenen, there are other reasons they object to the expansion of the pit.
Township staff acknowledge that traffic and noise are key concerns, but also note that the pit is ideally located to support 401 construction projects. Additionally, municipal funding from aggregate operations could increase if the asphalt plant becomes operational.
Greenen says noise and traffic are just part of the issue.
Council’s decision is only the first step, as final approval rests with the provincial government.
