The Trenton Golden Hawks are heading to the Centennial Cup in Calgary after a dramatic 3-2 overtime win over the Milton Menace in Game 6 of the OJHL Championship Wednesday night.
It looked like the Menace had the game in hand after scoring a goal in each of the first two periods and maintaining a 2-0 lead until late in the third. But with just over two minutes to go, Trenton launched a stunning comeback.
Kyloe Ellis cut the deficit in half with a goal at 2:10 left in regulation, and Cooper Matthews tied it up with 1:03 to go, forcing overtime.
With the momentum now on Trenton’s side, Taeo Artichuk sealed the comeback, scoring the OT winner with help from Matthews and Corbin Roach.
Goaltender Ryan Sanborn was named playoff MVP, a key part of the Golden Hawks’ championship run. The win is especially sweet for Trenton, who lost the last two OJHL finals to the Collingwood Blues.
Matthews, who scored twice, is being hailed in Quinte West for his game-tying and tournament-clinching performances. His second goal of the night came on the power play, sending Trenton to the national stage.
The Golden Hawks will open their Centennial Cup campaign in Calgary on May 8 against the Manitoba champions, who will be decided in Game 7 between the Dauphin Kings and Northern Manitoba Blizzard.
Trenton will represent Ontario in the national tournament, held May 8-18, looking to carry their momentum all the way.
