Northumberland OPP say a Cobourg man is facing impaired and careless driving charges, as well as other offences, after police responded to a crash with a child passenger in Cramahe.
On Sunday, May 4, 2025, at about 12:30 p.m., police said emergency crews, including fire and EMS, responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash involving a passenger vehicle on its roof in a ditch on Durham Street North in the Township of Cramahe.
“A small child was also advised to be a passenger in the vehicle,” said police.
When police arrived on scene, they said both occupants were being treated by paramedics as a precaution.
Police said an impaired driving investigation was initiated and a demand made through an approved screening device (breath sample demand,) which allegedly resulted in a “fail” reading.
The accused was then arrested and transported to a nearby detachment for further testing, added police.
Another family member came to the location for the child, said OPP.
As a result of the investigation, police said a 31-year-old Cobourg man was charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus,) operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, careless driving, driving a motor vehicle with liquor readily available, and fail to ensure child properly secured.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The accused is scheduled to appear in Cobourg court at a later date. The accused also had their licence suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle impounded for seven days.
