A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support a family who lost their home in a destructive fire on Grandview Drive near Roseneath, overlooking Rice Lake.
The fire broke out shortly before noon on Sunday, May 11. Multiple 9-1-1 calls were made as thick black smoke billowed into the clear sky, visible from as far as Peterborough and Cobourg.
By the time crews from Alnwick/Haldimand and Hamilton Township fire departments reached the scene, it was a defensive operation.
The fire had already spread to a vehicle in the driveway. Crews brought in heavy equipment to extinguish hot spots, and the blaze was declared under control just after 1 p.m.
Fortunately, no one was home at the time of the fire. One firefighter was taken to hospital with a minor injury.
Early estimates suggest the damage could exceed $1 million.
Donations are being collected to help the family recover.
The GoFundMe campaign is available online and seeks to provide support for rebuilding and replacing belongings lost in the fire.
