Northumberland OPP say an inmate has been charged after an alleged assault at Warkworth Institution last year.
In an update on Thursday, May 22, 2025, police said a 32-year-old man from Loyalist Township has been charged with aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
Police said their investigation started back on Dec. 20, 2024, at about 11:20 a.m., when OPP received a report about an alleged assault that had occurred earlier that morning at the medium-security facility.
The altercation reportedly involved two inmates, and an edged weapon was involved, said police.
One person was originally transported to a local hospital with serious injuries and then later airlifted to another hospital, reported police.
As a result of the investigation, OPP said officers arrested the accused on May 20, 2025.
The accused will appear in Cobourg court at a later date.
