Investigators are continuing to call on the public for help after a hate-motivated mischief incident involving seven vehicles being targeted and vandalized at a mosque in Orono, say police.
Durham Regional Police said they’re appealing for any witnesses to step forward after members from its East Division responded to reports of hate-motivated incidents at 111 Church St. N. on Saturday, May 24, about 10:30 p.m.
“Information was received that several vehicles were vandalized, as well as the front door of the mosque,” reads a recent release from the service.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have dashcam, CCTV, or cellphone footage from the area around the time of the incident, to come forward. Witnesses can contact investigators directly or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
“We are aware of the deep concern and distress this incident has caused, particularly within our Muslim community,” said the service. “We understand the fear and anxiety such events can create, and we want to reassure everyone that we are taking this matter seriously.
“Our investigation is ongoing, and we are working closely with community leaders to provide support and ensure that all residents feel safe. We stand firmly against hate and discrimination in all forms and remain committed to protecting every member of our community.”
