Demolition work at the former Belleville Police Station is expected to get underway this summer to make way for a 66-unit affordable housing condo project, says Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings.
Habitat has announced the finalization of an agreement with the City of Belleville to advance the affordable housing development at 93 Dundas St. E.
“We are thrilled to move forward with this vital project,” said Hazzem Koudsi, Habitat’s CEO. “This partnership with the City of Belleville is a shining example of what can be achieved when we work together to create lasting solutions to housing insecurity.
“The model of Habitat for Humanity ensures that affordable homeownership is within reach of hard-working families and individuals – this major project ensures this philosophy is put into practice in our community,” continued Koudsi.
Described as a transformative and landmark project, the development will create a 66-unit condominium complex, providing safe, decent and affordable housing for families and people in need, helping to address the region’s growing housing crisis.
Belleville Mayor Neil Ellis called the project a major milestone, and said the city is proud to support Habitat in bringing this vision to life.
The new development will offer a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom units designed to meet diverse needs. Demolition at the former police station site is anticipated to start in late summer – occupancy is expected in spring 2028, noted Habitat.
Habitat PEH board chair Sheridan Jennings said this project is an excellent example of what Habitat and the city can do while working in tandem to build a stronger community and alleviating some socio-economic pressures locally.
Habitat is encouraging the community to stay engaged with the project as it progresses and noted that more information, including opportunities for involvement and support, will be shared in the coming months.
The development will reportedly triple Habitat’s housing output while improving quality of life for working families and have deep economic and social ripple effects.
