Belleville police have released updates on several serious investigations from over the weekend, while also confirming an attempted murder charge has been laid after a domestic incident.
Here’s the latest from the Belleville Police Service:
ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE LAID
The service said on May 30 at about 5:03 p.m., police responded to an east-end residence following a complaint of a domestic dispute. After arriving on scene, police said they heard an ongoing altercation inside the residence and immediately became concerned for the safety of those involved – they then forcibly entered the home, allegedly contending with door being intentionally barricaded with a couch.
Once inside, officers’ observations and investigation formulated grounds to arrest a 28-year-old Ottawa man, reported the service.
The accused was subsequently charged with uttering threats to cause death, forcible confinement, assault, failing to comply with a probation order, and overcoming resistance – choking, reported police.
Meanwhile, members of the service’s criminal investigations division carried on with the investigation into the alleged incident, and a further charge of attempted murder has now been laid after police said they learned the suspect allegedly attempted to drown the victim.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The man was held for a bail hearing. Police said the name of the accused isn’t being released to protect the identity of the victim.
‘VIOLENT INCIDENTS’ LEAD TO ARREST OF TWEED MAN
A 50-year-old Tweed man is facing a slew of charges after several alleged “violent incidents,” say police.
On May 31, at about 7:35 p.m., police said they received a call from fire and paramedics to respond to an east-end residence after a 72-year-old woman was found outside suffering from significant head trauma.
As a result of the injuries, the female was transported to a Kingston hospital with life-threatening injuries, reported police.
The service said members of its uniform and criminal investigations division then initiated an investigation, and police were able to identify a suspect and an associated vehicle that allegedly fled before emergency crews’ arrival.
During their investigation, police said they identified a second adult female victim, saying she was the victim of ongoing criminal harassment by the same suspect.
Initially, police were unable to locate the suspect – but later that evening, police received an unrelated call back to the same residential area as the initial call, reported the service.
Upon arrival, police said they observed the suspect in a vehicle and initiated a high-risk vehicle stop.
The suspect vehicle stopped allegedly stopped momentarily – but during the attempted arrest, the suspect reportedly placed the vehicle in reverse and intentionally rammed a police cruiser “causing extensive damage,” said police.
The accused 50-year-old Tweed man was later taken into custody, with police claiming a loaded hunting rifle was also found on the passenger seat of the suspect’s vehicle.
The officer in the damaged cruiser was taken to hospital for precautionary assessment.
The accused was held for a bail hearing.
As a result of the investigation, police said he was charged with operation while impaired, occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm, aggravated assault, criminal harassment, possession of a weapon, assault with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer, careless use of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The name of the accused won’t be released to protect the identity of the victim, added police.
The 72-year-old victim remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries, said police.
HARASSMENT, MISCHIEF CHARGES LAID
An investigation into numerous alleged incidents of harassment and mischief has led to the arrest of a 26-year-old Belleville man, say police.
Between May 25 and 29, the service said police received 14 complaints of public mischief, harassment and uttering threats, which all appeared to be related.
The criminal investigative division spearheaded the probe.
Police said examples of the incidents included more than 50 fraudulent requests for taxi services, false food deliveries, fraudulent requests for a tow truck and alleged posts on social media platforms about individuals who were in imminent danger, including being held against their will at gunpoint at specific locations, which reportedly prompted an immediate police response utilizing extensive resources.
A suspect was subsequently identified, and on May 31, the team, with help from the emergency response unit, executed a search warrant in the city’s west end, resulting in the arrest of the 26-year-old Belleville man without incident.
As a result of the investigation, police said the accused was charged with public mischief, mischief – interfering with victims’ lawful enjoyment of their property, criminal harassment, and two counts of uttering threats.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The accused was held for a bail hearing.
