You can travel back in time in Brighton all summer long with the return of the Heritage and History Hunt.
Organizers have rolled out new clues for this season. The event encourages residents and visitors to travel to historic sites and unearth local stories on events, sites, families and industries that shaped Brighton through time.
Wondering how to participate?
You need to pick-up or download and print a clue card to start. Cards are available online and at the Municipal Centre, Presqu’ile Provincial Park store and camp office and at the visitor info phone booth at Main and Prince Edward streets.
Next, you find plaques using your cards as a guide.
Folks need to visit at least 15 historical plaque sites, note organizers, adding approximate locations are included on cards. More precise locations are also available using a digital map through scanning QR codes online or on cards.
As participants travel to the sites, they also collect “secret symbols” and answers to historical questions for a chance at prizes. When people locate the historical plaques, they read through the information and record answers to questions in the cards in the appropriate location, explain organizers.
The “secret symbols” serve as confirmation of visiting the sites and are found on bright pink paper on the plaques.
Folks can trek to sites throughout the summer collecting answers. After at least 15 questions are answered and secret symbols recorded, clue cards can be taken to participating businesses for prizes.
At Presqu’ile Park Place, a card is good for a double scoop ice-cream waffle cone. At Lola’s Cafe, you can enjoy a medium iced latte – or maybe you’re craving iced tea? If so, hit up Special Effects Lifestyle Boutique and Tearoom.
The clue cards can also be used to get a free small ice cream in a cup from Cheer Farms or mozzarella sticks from Pollywogs. Meanwhile, Harry’s Hots will serve you up a hotdog and drink combo.
At Oh Dahlyla, a small ice cream is up for grabs, and at the Parris and Co. Coffee Bar, an Italian soda.
At the Tin Roof Ice Creamery, you can also get a small soft serve, and the Rendezvous food truck by Timber House Resort is offering mac and cheese fingers.
Organizers note that there is only one prize per card submitted, and cards can only be redeemed one time at one location and only at participating businesses. They also hold no cash value.
The hunt is on until Aug. 31. More details can be found online.
