A 47-year-old man from Bowmanville is facing a spousal assault charge following a reported domestic dispute near a busy Port Hope highway exit.
According to the Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), officers responded to a call on the westbound off-ramp of Highway 401 at Toronto Road in Port Hope. The report came in after a witness observed a suspected assault and contacted police.
Following an investigation at the scene, officers arrested a man and charged him with one count of spousal assault. The accused was released with conditions and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in July 2025.
The OPP are reminding residents that victims of domestic violence are not alone. Support is available through community agencies, including Peterborough Northumberland Victim Services. Help is also available by calling their toll-free number at 1-888-822-7729. All information is kept anonymous and confidential.
Police say anyone in immediate danger should call 911.
Domestic violence continues to be a serious concern across Ontario, and police urge community members to report suspicious or harmful behaviour when it’s safe to do so.
