Premier Doug Ford has invited all 13 provincial and territorial premiers to Muskoka for this summer’s Council of the Federation meeting, scheduled for July 21 to 23 in Huntsville, Ontario.
The gathering will focus on strengthening Canada’s economy, boosting competitiveness, and pushing forward major nation-building projects. Premier Ford says the meeting will build on momentum from last month’s First Ministers’ Meeting in Saskatoon.
“With President Trump taking direct aim at our economy, we need to build and we need to build fast,” said Ford in a statement. “There’s never been a more important time for all of us from coast to coast to coast to work together to build the most competitive economy in the G7.”
Premiers will also meet with leaders of National Indigenous Organizations during the event. Discussions will focus on economic reconciliation, development, and shared priorities for Indigenous communities across the country.
Ford, who currently serves as Council chair, has led a “Team Canada” approach during his term-highlighted by a joint mission of all 13 premiers to Washington, D.C. to advocate for Canadian interests. His priorities at the Council table have included developing Ontario’s Ring of Fire mineral resources, expanding nuclear energy projects, and fixing Canada’s bail system.
The Council of the Federation was founded in 2003 to strengthen interprovincial collaboration. It rotates its chair annually, with summer meetings hosted by the premier holding the role.
Ontario last hosted the summer meeting in 2010.
