A Warkworth resident is facing impaired driving charges following a dangerous driving incident on Highway 401 near Port Hope.
According to Northumberland OPP, officers were called around 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, after reports of a vehicle being driven erratically in the eastbound lanes. The vehicle had reportedly struck a concrete barrier before crossing all three lanes of traffic and coming to a stop on the right-hand shoulder.
Police located the silver Hyundai SUV with damage to the front fender and rim, but the driver was not at the scene. Officers later found the suspected driver at the vehicle owner’s residence, where they observed signs of impairment and noted a strong odour of alcohol. The driver reportedly refused to provide a suitable breath sample.
The 34-year-old from Warkworth was arrested and charged with failure or refusal to comply with a demand, dangerous operation, and operation while impaired by alcohol or drugs. The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on August 27, 2025.
The OPP reminds the public that refusing a breath test carries the same consequences as driving while impaired. Drivers are urged to plan ahead and avoid driving under the influence.
