Work in the Harbour Street area as part of the Prince Edward Street/County Road 64 reconstruction project in Brighton is taking a little longer than originally anticipated.
As a result, the Harbour Street area – between Mill Pond Court and County Road 64 – will continue to be closed for an additional two weeks for continued infrastructure work, said the Municipality of Brighton, in a brief construction update.
As the second phase of the multi-year reconstruction project ramped up, the road was previously closed back on June 16 and was slated to remain closed for about two-three weeks.
Municipal and county officials previously stated that the closure was needed to tackle underground water main and stormwater drainage upgrades.
In terms of the latest, a full road closure along this impacted stretch of road is now anticipated to remain in place until July 11.
Traffic is being rerouted along Cedar Street during the closure.
After this work wraps up, Harbour Street is set to reopen, and reconstruction efforts will shift to Prince Edward Street between Harbour and Cedar streets. A road closure is anticipated for the remainder of summer along this stretch.
Focus will then shift to work towards Loyalist Drive, stretching into fall. The remaining work up to Elizabeth Street isn’t scheduled until 2026.
The reconstruction project is a joint multi-million-dollar effort between Northumberland County and Brighton tackling underground sewers and water mains, sidewalks, cycling lanes, intersection improvements and other traffic calming measures, in addition to full asphalt repaving.
Final curb, sidewalk and paving work, along with landscaping efforts and other finishing touches, are expected to continue into late fall.
