The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a collision north of Cobourg sent a 25-year-old man to hospital with serious injuries.
The SIU is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and said in a release that preliminary information so far indicates at about 12:20 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, an OPP officer in a marked cruiser attempted to pull over a black SUV travelling northbound on County Road 45 for alleged speeding.
“A short time later, the SUV was involved in a single-vehicle collision in Fenella,” said the SIU, adding that a male driver was then sent to a Toronto hospital for treatment of injuries described as serious.
One investigator, two forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case, reported officials, adding that one subject official and two witness officials have been designated at this time.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-852 or online via the SIU website.
Northumberland OPP also issued a release yesterday saying the SIU had invoked its mandate following an incident during the early morning hours in Alnwick/Haldimand.
On Tuesday, shortly after midnight, police reported that officers were conducting speed enforcement in the County Road 45 area when they allegedly observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed.
“Moments later, the vehicle was involved in a single-vehicle collision. The lone occupant of the vehicle sustained life-altering injuries and was transported to hospital,” said OPP, in its release.
SIU was then notified, said police, adding that as a result, police will not provide further information related to the interaction between police and the individual.
In parallel, OPP said police are conducting their own investigation into the circumstances that led to the collision.
The crash shut down the County Road 45 area between Roseneath Landing Road and Bowmanton Road yesterday until just after 4 p.m. as members of OPP’s traffic incident management and enforcement team were called in to help with the investigation, reported OPP.
Police are also asking anyone with information regarding their investigation to contact OPP 1-888-310-1122.
Crime Stoppers is also an anonymous option where people can submit tips online or by calling 1-800-222-8477. People who submit tips through Crime Stoppers do not have to testify in court and may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.
