The Port Hope Police Service is warning residents after a noticeable rise in suspicious activity linked to organized auto theft rings.
Over the past few weeks, officers have received multiple reports of people walking through residential driveways during late night and early morning hours, appearing to scout luxury vehicles and pickup trucks. These types of vehicles are frequently targeted by thieves who use advanced tools, such as signal boosters or reprogramming devices to gain access.
Police say some tell-tale signs of suspicious activity include:
- People walking close to parked vehicles at night
- Vehicles driving slowly through neighbourhoods with their lights off
- Individuals using electronic devices near vehicle doors
- Signs of tampered locks or door handles
Residents are reminded not to confront anyone seen engaging in these activities. If a crime is in progress, call 911. For non-emergencies, you can reach Port Hope Police at 905-885-8123 or submit a tip anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
Port Hope Police continue to investigate and are working with regional and provincial partners to deter organized auto thefts. Community awareness is key to stopping these incidents before they happen.
