Construction is officially underway on Northumberland County’s Burnley Bridge Replacement Project.
Work began Friday, July 11, and the bridge on County Road 29 in the village of Burnley is now closed to all traffic through to November. Detours are in place using McDonald Road, County Road 22, and Jakobi Road, with signs guiding local drivers around the work zone.
The existing single-lane bridge, originally built in 1950, had reached the end of its service life. It is being replaced with a new two-lane precast concrete bridge with a distribution slab, improved approach roads, and steel beam guide rails for added safety. A permanent speed reduction will also be introduced in the area as part of the improvements.
“This is a significant infrastructure upgrade, and we appreciate the public’s patience as we complete this important work,” said Peter Deshane, Manager of Infrastructure with Northumberland County.
Last December, the County hosted a public information session to share the plans and gather community input. That feedback helped refine the final design and reduce construction impacts on residents.
The new bridge will meet modern safety, accessibility, and environmental standards ensuring a reliable crossing for decades to come.
