Northumberland OPP has welcomed its new commander.
Insp. Mike Cavanagh has officially taken over as detachment commander, bringing more than 20 years of policing experience to the role.
Cavanagh began his law enforcement career with the Stirling-Rawdon Police Service in 2005 before moving to the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service. He joined OPP in 2010, serving at the City of Kawartha Lakes Detachment and holding various positions across multiple communities.
His background includes time with the OPP’s organized crime enforcement bureau in the drug enforcement unit and roles at both the Peterborough County and Haliburton Highlands detachments, most recently as interim commander in Haliburton.
Cavanagh is a graduate of Fleming College’s correctional worker program and has completed the senior police leadership course through Trent University. In recognition of his two decades of service, he has been awarded the Police Exemplary Service Medal.
According to OPP, Cavanagh’s extensive knowledge of detachment operations and investigative policing make him a strong fit for the role.
“I am pleased to welcome Michael Cavanagh, and I offer our congratulations on behalf of the Northumberland OPP Detachment Board,” said board chair John Davison. “His experience and knowledge will serve our communities well.”
Cavanagh now leads the detachment responsible for policing across Northumberland County, providing leadership to officers and staff while serving the region’s residents and visitors.
