Families in the region are being encouraged to apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) as the federal program expands to include more people of all ages.
The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit and Peterborough Public Health, now legally merged, say the plan is an important way to make dental care more accessible, especially for families without private insurance.
The CDCP currently covers children under 18, seniors, adults with disabilities, and now adults between 18 and 64. To qualify, families must have a net income under $90,000, no private dental insurance, and have filed their taxes. Once enrolled, they will receive a card from Sun Life that outlines coverage start dates, eligibility details and what procedures are included.
The Health Unit says they’ve heard from families whose dentists are now requiring CDCP enrolment, even for children already covered under Ontario’s Healthy Smiles program. Health promoter Anna Rusak says public health is available to help guide parents through both programs and ensure they understand how to access coverage.
To avoid unexpected fees, families are urged to confirm with their dental provider that they accept CDCP clients and check what costs may still apply before booking an appointment.
Applications can be submitted online, or families can contact the Health Unit directly for assistance at 1-866-888-4577 ext. 1247 or visit www.hkpr.on.ca/CDCP.
Public health says families should never pay the full cost upfront, as Sun Life will not reimburse them directly.
