Northumberland OPP are reminding drivers of the dangers of failing to follow Ontario’s Move Over Law after stopping a motorist who passed too close to emergency vehicles on the shoulder of Highway 401.
Police say the incident happened on the westbound lanes while two cruisers and a tow truck were pulled over with lights flashing. A tow truck operator was actively loading a vehicle when the driver failed to slow down or change lanes.
Ontario’s Move Over Law was introduced in 2003 to protect first responders and roadside workers. It requires drivers to reduce speed and, when safe to do so, move over into another lane when approaching police, fire, ambulance, tow trucks, or roadside assistance vehicles stopped with flashing lights.
Failing to comply can result in fines up to $2,000, three demerit points, and licence suspensions for repeat offences.
Police say the safety of emergency personnel and support workers depends on the public’s attention and cooperation. “Slow down. Move over. Drive responsibly,” said the Northumberland OPP in a statement posted to X (formerly Twitter).
More information about the Move Over Law is available through the Ontario Ministry of Transportation website.
