Young entrepreneurs across Northumberland County gathered on Wednesday, August 13 at Staples Cobourg for the annual Youth Entrepreneurship Showcase, hosted by the Business & Entrepreneurship Centre Northumberland (BECN).
The event featured 24 youth-run businesses participating in the Summer Company program for ages 15 to 29 and the My Future My Career program for ages 8 to 14. Over the course of the day, participants generated nearly $2,000 in sales and received 43 inquiries, reflecting growing community interest in youth-led initiatives.
The showcase offers mentorship, coaching, and micro grants to help young people turn their ideas into viable businesses. Vendors presented a wide range of products and services, including dog treats, handmade crafts, lawn care, clothing brands, and digital media solutions. These opportunities allow youth to practice entrepreneurship skills, connect with customers, and gain practical business experience.
County Warden Brian Ostrander emphasized the importance of empowering youth as the next generation of innovators and economic contributors. The event demonstrates how programs like BECN’s can strengthen skills, build confidence, and create lasting impacts in the local economy.
For those who missed Wednesday’s showcase, select participants will return for Youth Day at the Cobourg Farmers’ Market on Saturday, August 23, from 9 a.m. to noon. This provides another chance for the community to engage with young entrepreneurs and support local talent.
