Northumberland County and area municipalities are urging motorists to drive cautiously as the new school year begins.
The annual ‘Slow Your Roll’ campaign, launched in 2021 by the Northumberland Inter-municipal Public Works Committee, encourages drivers to reduce speeds in school zones, hamlets, and residential areas.
Flashing signals introduced at select schools in 2023 require drivers to slow to 40 kilometres per hour when active, while many school zones now feature reduced speed limits. Officials stress that stopping for school buses, paying attention to crossing guards, and using designated drop-off and pick-up areas are essential safety measures.
Associate Director of Engineering, Public Works Carol Coleman says, “As students return to school, it’s more important than ever for all of us to prioritize safety on our roads. By reducing speeds and following traffic rules, especially in school zones, we can create a safer environment for everyone.”
The county encourages drivers to remain vigilant, plan extra time for school drop-offs, and follow posted signs and signals. By working together, municipalities and residents aim to make this school year safer for every child traveling to and from school.
